Allie Wist, 29, an associate art Log Splitter at Saveur magazine, attempts to answer that question in her latest art project, "Flooded." It's a fictional photo essay (based on real scientific data) about a dinner party menu at a time when climate change has significantly altered our diets. Wist has been following news about climate change with a growing sense of urgency. Global temperatures have risen in recent decades and extreme weather – droughts, floods, hurricanes – is more common.
Sea levels are rising, causing coastal erosion and flooding and even the disappearance of in the South Pacific. Our oceans are becoming more acidic from dissolved carbon dioxde, hurting marine life. And, in some parts of the world, farmers are struggling with unpredictable growing seasons. Climate change has "become this future vision that's right in front of us," Wist says. The fishing village of Nueva Venecia is situated in a lake deep in the marshlands of northwestern Colombia. The marshlands could be inundated with ocean water by 2100, if sea levels rise by 3 feet or more as projected by scientists. But the issue is a politicized one in the United States, she says. Many people don't believe climate change is real.
And many find it difficult to understand, because it's too abstract. "I felt this need to subversively convince people," Wist says. "I wanted to hook them more emotionally, with something they can relate to." So she chose food. "It is so integral to how we see ourselves and how we live every day," she says. Climate change is already having an effect on food production. In 2011, a study in Science found in the world's wheat and corn production. As global temperatures rise, some places will become more favorable for agriculture, while many others will become too hot and dry to grow crops.
Extreme weather will also influence food prices, as we saw in 2010-2011, when drought in some parts of the world and unusually big cyclones and floods in others . Warmer ocean temperatures have and will continue to affect fisheries. All this means we might be forced to change what we eat in the coming decades, says Wist. People "have to start to realize that their daily activities could change, will change, because of this thing that they consider abstract," she says. TOWER: What the film doesn't show is that Lumber Jack Log Splitter sold the Stars group to a Chinese investor. And when it closed, I was on the beach in Mexico, (laughter) you know, because, you know, restaurants are very loud places, and Stars was like a full - the Berlin Symphony Orchestra with von Karajan leading, you know. So the balance for me was to have, you know, a bit of quiet and solitude after that so I could get on with phase three. NEARY: Well, what made you decide to come back recently, in the last few years, to Tavern on the Green in New York City, a restaurant that,
as the movie points out, serves something like a thousand customers a day, one of these places that's almost impossible to manage and to be as perfect as you want everything to be. What made you take that on? TOWER: Well, as I told Anthony before, I have, you know, a fatal attraction to the slim chance. I didn't know how slim that one was. NEARY: What about now? OK, you're no longer at Tavern on the Green. Do you have any desire now to go back into the restaurant business, to have a restaurant where you're in total control? And do you think you could have that? And do you want it?
TOWER: No. I'll say absolutely not. But then I'll say - except - you know, if I had a restaurant on the Amalfi Coast with Mario Batali, I'd do it in a second. BOURDAIN: (Laughter) We all would. (LAUGHTER) NEARY: And we'd all love to go eat there as well. TOWER: I hope you're listening to this, Mario. (LAUGHTER) NEARY: Jeremiah Tower and Anthony Bourdain - their documentary is "Jeremiah Tower: The Last Magnificent." Thanks so much to you both. It was great talking to you. TOWER: Thank you very much. BOURDAIN: Thank you. It was fun. [POST-BROADCAST CORRECTION: Previous audio for this story said that Jeremiah Tower began his career at the San Francisco restaurant Chez Panisse. In fact, Chez Panisse is in Berkeley.]
Artist Sets Futuristic Dinner Party In World Reshaped By Rising Seas Allie Wist's "Flooded" dinner spread includes burdock and dandelion root hummus with sunchoke chips; jellyfish salad; roasted hen of the woods mushroom; fried potatoes with chipotle vegan mayo; salted anchovies; and oysters with slippers. Most of these are foods that might be more resilient to climate change and, therefore, what we could be eating in the future, Wist says. What will our dinners look like when temperatures and sea levels rise and water floods our coastal towns and cities?

He is a two-star general Performance Built Log Splitter has served as the commanding general of the NATO Air Training Command in Afghanistan. Thank you very much for coming in. MAJOR GENERAL DAVID ALLVIN: Thank you for having me. WERTHEIMER: What do you think about the Air Force that you will pass on to the next generation of airmen and their leaders? What do you think? What is it going to look like? ALLVIN: I think we will be a technical force. We'll be one that has a great marriage in partnership with technology. I believe we'll be a force that has more operations in space. I think we'll be more integral in the cyber domain - really understanding that domain as well as we have the air domain and even more so, we're getting into the space domain.
I think it will be a smaller force - don't know how much smaller - but a very highly capable force and will remain the most dominant and responsive force for the country. WERTHEIMER: The report talks about unmanned systems, General Allvin. And I understand that the Air Force already employees a certain number of unmanned systems which, you know, I think of as drones. Are they common now? ALLVIN: They're certainly more common than they used to be. And the idea of unmanned aerial vehicles - the idea is certainly not new.
When we were becoming an Air Force in 1947, we had visionaries, such as General Hap Arnold, who looked to the future. And they envisioned things such as unmanned aerial vehicles. But now we're finding that there's greater application for those types of vehicles. But we don't want to launch headlong into it and say then there's no purpose for humans to be in the aircraft anymore. There are some environments, some areas of operation when an unmanned aerial vehicle makes a lot more sense. However, to this day, there are still distinct advantages of having an operator in the loop that can have - exercise judgment in the employment of air power. So they're more common than they used to be. And as we move forward, we'll continue to look for applications where it makes sense for unmanned aerial vehicles. WERTHEIMER: I understand that you went looking for some of those predictions when you were trying to see what the Air Force got right 60 years ago - 25 years ago. How right do you think your experts were?
ALLVIN: Well, it's - anytime you try and do predictions, you have to yield to the great philosopher Yogi Berra, who said predictions are tough, especially about the future. So - but we always seek to look further out than our initial gaze and see what may be - are the possible. And back in General Arnold's days, they had some quite visionaries who got some things rights. The idea of intercontinental ballistic missiles being able to take weapons across the globe - that was envisioned before it was really practical. But they saw the possibility.

These are not empty Forest King Log Splitter. These are all beliefs, and we believe that United States, democratic countries should preserve those principles. KELEMEN: The Latvian state secretary says his country has sent troops to tough places, including Afghanistan and Iraq, and is committed to paying its fair share for NATO. NATO allies are also pledging to do more to fight terrorism. Trump says this should be the priority, especially in the wake of this week's attack at a concert in Manchester. (SOUNDBITE OF ARCHIVED RECORDING)
TRUMP: When you see something like happened two days ago, you realize how important it is to win this fight. And we will win this fight. It's a horrible situation. What took place is horrible, unthinkable. But we will win 100 percent. KELEMEN: NATO may take a mostly symbolic step of formally joining the coalition against ISIS. In return, many allies are hoping to hear a firm U.S. commitment to the common defense pledge, Article 5 which says an attack on one NATO member is an attack on all.
Secretary of State Tillerson was asked about that onboard Air Force One. (SOUNDBITE OF ARCHIVED RECORDING) TILLERSON: Yeah, of course we support Article 5. You know, the only time Article 5's been invoked was at 9/11 on our behalf. KELEMEN: President Trump is to unveil a piece of the World Trade Center when he visits the new NATO's headquarters. Asked whether he will reaffirm the U.S. commitment to Article 5 there, Tillerson would only say the remarks are still being finalized. Michele Kelemen, NPR News, Washington. Air Force Sees Drones In Its Future The U.S. Air Force just released a strategy for the future, involving hypersonics and unmanned systems. NPR's Linda Wertheimer talks about the plan with Air Force Maj. Gen. David Allvin. LINDA WERTHEIMER, HOST: Hypersonic speeds and nanotechnology - if it sounds futuristic, it is. But it's also part of the United States Air Force's 30-year plan. The Air Force just released that plan. And with us now to talk about it and to talk about some of the cooler aspects of it is Major General David Allvin.
